Doc campgrounds are by far the cheapest options and often time the most scenic spots too. Plus a portion of your camping fee goes directly into the maintenance costs and preservation work of the campsite so that people can enjoy the campsites for generations to come.
However, don’t disregard non-doc campgrounds as depending on your needs they could be a better fit for you.

Rules around camping in Hokitika
New Zealand is dedicated to keeping its forests and waterways clean. So it’s important to take home everything you came with and dispose of waste/rubbish responsibly. Most campsites will have bins and toilet facilities, please use these to ensure our country stays beautiful.
You can light a fire in open air without a permit – as long as you do so safely, have permission from the relevant land owner or occupier, and Fire and Emergency New Zealand hasn’t prohibited the lighting of fires in open air in the location of your proposed fire.
